Is there ever a cost for us to be in the Coping Power program?
Absolutely not! Our programs are federally funded and therefore there is never a cost for you or your child.
-
Where do the Coping Power groups take place?
The child groups will take place during the school day at your child’s school. We work with the school counselor to set up the best day and time for the group. The parent meetings usually take place at night at our office at the University of Alabama or a convenient location near your child’s school.
-
What if we sign up for Coping Power and later change our minds?
You and your child are volunteers with our program. You or your child can withdraw from the program whenever you like. However, we rarely have families who want to withdraw. The children really enjoy being in the group and hanging out with their peers while working towards goals that they have set and earning awesome rewards like video games and gift cards! The parents have expressed how much they appreciate being able to talk with other parents and discuss important topics for their families.
-
Why was my child recruited for this program?
As we develop new versions of the Coping Power program, we have to make sure that they consistently produce the same fantastic results that our original program does. We do these studies to improve the program for children all over the world - so we recruit students of all backgrounds from local schools. If we contact you about joining the Coping Power Program, it's likely that your child's teacher completed a short questionnaire about every child's behavior in class, we analyzed the results, made a randomized calling list, and then you happened to be near the top! We provide the Coping Power Program for free to you and your child in the hopes that we can use the data to ensure our program is getting even better at helping children succeed in school and in life.
-
Will my child’s grades be affected by their participation in the program?
Not negatively! We work closely with your child’s counselors and teachers to schedule our once a week Coping Power meetings. They usually set the group day and time during an elective period. We frequently see grades improve! In addition to many other skills, we teach study and organizational skills as part of our program.
-
Will my child be singled out due to being in the Coping Power program?
The typical response from classmates is a positive one. They see the Coping Power kids earning rewards while working hard towards their goals and also see how much fun they have in the group!
-
I also have a younger child that could benefit from your program. How can I get them involved?
Our programs are grant funded and typically involve children in the 5th or 7th grades. However, many of our parents have told us that they come to the parent meetings and take that information and apply it to all of their children at home.
